Bredasdorp - A Tapestry

Bredasdorp (established in 1838) is a delightful town situated in a magical part of South Africa – the Overberg. It has a rich history, peppered with colouful characters such as van Breda and vand der Bijl . The country side is a wonderful tapestry that changes colour each season – from shades of bare brown and red and yellow soils in the summer (visitors have even asked if the farmers farm stones) to soft shades of green early in autumn and deep shades of green as the grain and other winter crops grow with bright flashes of yellow when the canola starts flowering in August. Bredasdorp

What would you like to know? Bredasdorp was founded on the farm Langefontein in 1838, by the Hon. Michiel van Breda, who was the first mayor of Cape Town and a member of the Cape Legislative Council. The old farm homestead together with the old Independent Church alongside, are both national monuments and both buildings today house a unique and fascinating collection of shipwreck memorabilia. The Shipwreck Museum in Bredasdorp, tells the tale of the fate of many a soul who encountered the rough seas.

Bredasdorp

We didn't explore Bredasdorp too much but we did compete in the Napier Petatfees half-marathon and mountain bike challenge. I would use it as a good base camp for events in the area, such as as 'the foot' and the De Hoop mountain bike races.
